Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The MCSO Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine offers a comprehensive course of therapy to assist healing a patient’s problem wound.

Patients receive a thorough diagnostic examination to identify the type of wound and the underlying cause, followed by a specifically tailored treatment plan which might include physical therapy, lab evaluation, etc.

Some patients will be treated in one of three hyperbaric oxygen chambers. In the specialized units, the patient breathes 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber for short periods of time. The therapy quickly delivers high concentrations of oxygen to the blood stream. This accelerates healing and is effective in fighting certain kinds of infections. It also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, improving circulation and helps to prevent future problems.

Studies of hyperbaric oxygen therapy have shown that amputation rates have significantly been reduced and the hospital length of stay for those patients has dropped by 24%.
